Developing a Rhythm of Serving

Scripture: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” — Mark 10:45 (ESV)

Most of us understand that serving is a good thing. We volunteer for a project, help a neighbor move, or give our time during a church event. Those moments matter—but God invites us into something even deeper. He isn’t just asking us to serve occasionally; He’s shaping us into people who naturally live lives of service. Just like prayer, Bible reading, silence, solitude, and worship become rhythms that draw us closer to Jesus, serving is a spiritual practice that transforms our hearts. Every time we choose to love a neighbor, meet a practical need, or offer our gifts for God’s Kingdom, we become a little more like Christ. Jesus didn’t fit serving into His schedule. Serving was His lifestyle. Everywhere He went, He noticed people, showed compassion, and met needs. As His followers, we’re invited to develop that same rhythm—not out of obligation, but out of love. When serving becomes part of our regular rhythm, something beautiful happens. We begin to see our neighborhoods differently. We recognize opportunities instead of interruptions. We discover that God uses ordinary acts of kindness to open doors for extraordinary conversations about His love. At Harvester, we say we want to unleash the hope of Jesus. Hope is unleashed when the Church steps beyond its walls and into the lives of people who need to experience God’s love in tangible ways. A consistent rhythm of volunteering isn’t just about filling a schedule—it’s about participating in God’s mission of bringing hope to our community.

Ask yourself:

  • Where is God inviting me to make serving a regular rhythm instead of an occasional event?
  • Who is one neighbor I can intentionally love this week?
  • How might God use my willingness to serve to point someone toward Jesus?

Prayer

Hey God, thank You for showing us what it means to serve with humility and love. Shape my heart to become more like Yours. Help serving become a natural rhythm of my life, not just something I do occasionally. Open my eyes to the needs around me, and use my hands, my time, and my gifts to unleash Your hope in my neighborhood and community. May every act of service point people to You. Amen.

What are our next steps after Good Neighbor Serve Week?

At Harvester Christian, serving consistently and regularly is a part of each of our spiritual development. It is not an annual checklist to cross off. Rather, it is a regular rhythm: the more we encounter Jesus, become like Jesus, and unleash the hope of Jesus. Whether you were able to serve or not during Good Neighbor Serve Week, what are some possible next steps for you? One step might be to attend our next prayer retreat. This might be a great way for you to spend time with God and have a conversation with Him about where He is leading you next. The Invitation to Retreat is a free prayer retreat on August 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 pm. in Laurel Park. Perhaps you want to learn about more serving opportunities at Harvester. The VIP Tour on August 23 during 1st or 2nd service is a great next step to learn an overview of every ministry at Harvester. Another possibility for you is to sign up for our next course, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality,  starting September 9th in the Elementary Auditorium from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Over 9 weeks, this course will take a deeper look at how your emotional health affects your spiritual health. Upcoming Local Outreach Serving Opportunities

August Events

August 2-8, and August 30- September 5, Cooling Center in Annex. Volunteers are needed to be on call to host the Cooling Center for our unhoused neighbors if a heat advisory is issued next week. Shifts are 11:30 a.m. -2:30 p.m and 2:00 p.m. -5;00 p.m. Three volunteers are needed for each shift, and they must be a mix of men and women. Volunteers serve as hosts for our neighbors, offering light snacks and cold drinks and typical conversation and fellowship. Click this link to see open shifts.

August 4, Hospitality Volunteers for Elections. HCC hosts two polling sites for each election. This is a great opportunity for us to be hospitable to our literal neighbors. Volunteers are needed to greet guests, hold open doors, and offer a snack and a bottle of water as they leave. Shifts begin at 6:30 a.m. and run every two hours. 2-4 volunteers are needed at the South and North Entrances. Click this link to see open shifts.

August 6, Harvest Ridge Back To School Bash: It’s time for back-to-school events again! Our first one will be at Harvest Ridge Elementary, located at 1220 Harvest Ridge Dr, Saint Charles, MO 63303. Volunteers are needed from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to help set up, serve refreshments, assist in games, and encourage the students, families, and teachers. Click this link to sign up. 

August 11, Habitat for Humanity Informational Meeting. Join us on August 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the HCC Chapel to learn more about At Home Missions and how you might join one the St Charles County Church Build Days on September 18-19. RSVP using this link by August 7.

August 15, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. & August 19, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.Sharing Shed. The Sharing Shed is located at 923 E Terra Ln, O’Fallon, MO 63366. It provides furniture and household goods to families experiencing poverty, recovering from fire/flood, or rebuilding their lives after incarceration. Our Sharing Shed crews are serving twice in August to help families in need find household items as well as receive donations, clean donations, and organize donations. August 18, HCC Blood Drive. Volunteers AND Donors are needed for our Blood Drive on August 18 from 9 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Volunteers just greet donors, offer a snack after a donation, and help clean. We have a goal of 20 units of blood, so drop in on August 18 to help save a neighbor’s life! Click this link to sign up

August 18, Becky David Elementary Spruce Up, We are sending volunteers to help get our neighbors down the street at Becky David Elementary ready for the new school year by weeding and mulching the campus. Becky David is located at 1155 Jungs Station Rd
Saint Charles, MO 63303. Volunteers arrive at 7:00 p.m. with work gloves, any gardening or landscaping tools, shovels, and rakes. If you have a wheelbarrow, please bring that along too! Click this link to sign up

August 21, Becky David Welcome Back The Teachers Breakfast. Volunteers are needed to set up and serve a yogurt and bagel bar for the teachers and staff at Becky David Elementary. Volunteers need to arrive at Becky David by 7:30 a.m. and stay until 10:30 a.m. to help clean up. Click here to sign up.

September 2, School Outreach Pray & Prep. The first Wednesday night of every month, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., we pray over our schools, students, teachers, and administrators in the Annex workroom. September 19, Gateway Faith & Work SURRENDERED Symposium HCC St Charles is hosting Gateway Faith and Work’s annual one-day conference! What happens when our work, resources, and ambitions are fully surrendered to God? Join Christian professionals from across the region for a day of learning and fellowship as we explore stewardship, productivity, technology, and more through the lens of a biblical worldview. Prayers

  1. Pray for 8 families to commit to driving once a month 1-4 women living at Rise Up Transitional to church on Sundays and Celebrate Recovery on Monday nights
  2. Pray for the families coming to HCC to receive food, a cool spot from the heat, school supplies, or financial assistance to consider attending Harvester this fall so they can hear the Good News.
  3. Pray for 6 people to commit to tutoring third graders in math at Central Elementary School, 1- 2 hours a week during the school day for 6 weeks beginning in September
  4. Pray for people to commit to serving with our specific School Outreach teams at Becky David, Barnwell, Harvest Ridge, Hackmann Rd, and FHSD Parents As Teachers
  5. Pray for opportunities for our school outreach volunteers to be in schools focused on presence and not just events or tasks.
  6. Pray for God to move through and sustain each of our ministry and community partners 
  7. Pray that all of Harvester Christian continues the momentum of Good Neighbor Serve Week to intentionally share the love of Jesus with as many people as possible.

June 2026 HCC STC Local Outreach Newsletter

Devotional: “Is the point the thing?”

The people who have that laser focus to” get the thing done” and get things done quickly have always made me a bit nervous. I usually feel like I am in the way. I definitely don’t feel the sense of urgency, and I know in my own case, everything to try to do things too quickly, something bad typically happens, either I get hurt, or something gets broken. When our priority is to get the thing done, it leaves very little time for discussion and conversation.

My prayer for Good Neighbor Serve Week is for Harvester Christians to look past the description of “getting the thing done. “ Yes, there are meaningful tasks to complete to aid our neighbors, ministry partners, and community partners. Yes, the tasks in the serving opportunity help us build community and encourage one another. But in the larger picture, our obedience to serve and our sacrifice of time to God position us to have discussions with people we may never have had the chance to encounter before. The point isn’t “the thing” we are doing but the people we are reaching in the name of Jesus.

Join me in praying for God to create divine appointments for each person who commits to serve during Good Neighbor Serve Week, to unleash the hope of Jesus to passersby, to someone they are serving with, to a community or ministry partner staff person, or to a client of a program.

Reflect:

  1. When people observe my life, do they see a hope in Christ that would make them curious enough to ask about it?
    Reflect on whether your attitudes, words, and actions point others to Jesus and demonstrate the hope you have in Him.
  2. How can I prepare to share why I trust Christ, and communicate that truth with gentleness and respect?

Pray

Hey God, as I prepare to serve my neighbors during Good Neighbor Serve Week, help me reflect Your love in all we do. Open my eyes to opportunities to encourage others and share the hope I have in Jesus.

Give me courage to speak when the time is right, wisdom to listen well, and a heart that is full of kindness and grace. Lord, it is my desire to lead people to find and follow you.

Use our entire church to be a blessing in our community, and prepare the hearts of those we meet to experience Your love.

In Jesus’ name,

Through simple prayer prompts, guided moments of reflection, and unhurried time with God, you’ll be encouraged to release distractions, receive peace, and respond to the Spirit’s gentle leading. Whether you’re new to contemplative prayer or have practiced it for years, you’re invited to come and engage at your own pace.

Annual Pack A Pack Drive

Starts June 28th

HCC, you always show up big for our annual school supply drive! This year, HCC St Charles is collecting 200 backpacks for the Boys and Girls Club St Charles Unit Back to School Bash, as well as supplies for families who will come directly to our campus for the Good Neighbor Market. At the Good Neighbor Market, our neighbors will hear the gospel and an invitation to HCC Children and Student Ministry, then “shop” for free school supplies with personal shoppers. The children will experience a fun, uplifting event that helps preserve their dignity, featuring crafts, a photo booth, a visit with Officer Schue and Milly, the therapy dog, and a free Kona Ice. Please bring your Pack A Pack donations to the Mission Cafe between June 28 and July 12. May Update

Hello, Harvester Church Family!

As the spring weather warms up, our opportunities to show up and build trustworthy relationships in St. Charles County are heating up too. Our dream has always been for Harvester Christians to love God and love their neighbors naturally as a lifestyle, rather than just waiting for events and programming. This summer, let’s look at how we can carry the hope of Jesus into our everyday spaces, prepare for a massive summer of serving, and remain rooted in our discipleship foundation.

Devotional: Showing Up and Showing Up Again and Again and Again

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” — Acts 1:8

In Local Outreach, our core strategy is simple but requires radical commitment: We show up, and we show up again, and again, and again.

When we meet the tangible, physical needs of our community—whether that’s through the Food Pantry on Tuesday mornings, sorting furniture with the Sharing Shed, or packing school backpacks—we aren’t just checking off a volunteer box. We are earning the right to be heard as followers of Christ, not as humanitarian aid workers.

Our neighbors who are fighting poverty, navigating child welfare systems, or seeking mental health support need more than a one-time transaction; they need a relationship. Our teachers in our schools must be more than teachers in this age. They are social workers, mental health crisis counselors, and Supreme Court-level negotiators. This month, look at your “Jerusalem” (your neighborhood, your local grocery store, your sideline, your workplace). Where is the Holy Spirit calling you to show up consistently so that you can earn the right to share Christ’s life-changing love? Where do you need to take a step of faith and not wait for the perfect time or the perfect relationship or the perfect situation to share the hope of Jesus?

Reminders from Discipleship Training

For those who have walked through our recent discipleship training, the summer months are the ultimate testing ground for what we’ve learned. Let’s keep these three core principles at the front of our minds this month:

  • Move from Event to Lifestyle: True disciples don’t just participate in a service project; they live on mission. Watch for the needs around you daily. Discipleship is not only conversion. The lifestyle is our willingness to be discipled by Jesus, to walk and learn from him. Then discipling others, whether in our families, small groups, neighbors, or serve teams, to walk and learn from Jesus as well.

  • The Power of the Simple Question: As you see new faces in our community and at the St. Charles campus, keep our age-old question ready: “How long have you been attending Harvester?” It’s the easiest way to break the ice and start a real connection. Take some time and practice the Art of Small Talk to build relationships.

  • Serve from Rest, Not Weariness: We cannot pour out what we aren’t taking in. Prioritize your personal time with Jesus so your service comes from a place of spiritual overflow.

Speaking of showing up again and again! HUGE Shoutout to our Food Backpack Packing Crews. From January of this year to the middle of May, this crew packed and delivered approximately 2040 food backpacks for local school children experiencing food insecurity. Thank you to our Crew Leaders, Shelly Swart and Susan Nash, for your countless hours of leadership, coordination, and communication to the schools and to the volunteers! We also want to thank our Food Pantry volunteers, who are more reliable than the USPS used to be. It can be 20 below our 2000 degrees, and these volunteers show up week after week with joy and hope and beautiful servant hearts!

HCC Food Pantry Need: Canned meals such as Beefaroni, Beef Stew, Ravioli, etc. These can be dropped off in the bin outside the South Entrance or placed in the collection bin in the Mission Cafe.

 Mark Your Calendars: Good Neighbor Serve Week is Coming in July!

Our biggest outreach push of the summer is right around the corner. Get ready for Good Neighbor Serve Week, July 13-18!

This is an incredible, all-church, all-campus effort to unleash the hope of Jesus across our communities. We will partner with local municipalities, support our community and ministry partners, and tackle Pack A Pack to provide 300+ local students with school supplies before the new school year starts.

Whether you serve with your family, your small group, or your co-workers, make sure to save the date. Pray for God to lead you where He wants you to use your gifts and talents to serve your neighbors, then check out all the serving opportunities by clicking here==> Good Neighbor Serve Week 2026. Our Annual Pack A Pack Collection will run from June 28 through July 12 in the Mission Cafe. Drop off a complete backpack or any of the items needed. These school supplies will be used for the Boys and Girls Club St Charles Back to School Bash on July 25, as well as the Good Neighbor Market on July 30th. Hello Harvester family,

As we step into a new season of serving, we’re reminded that faith grows when we show up faithfully. Here’s what God is doing in and through Local Outreach—and how you can be part of it.

📖 Devotional

“Let us not grow weary of doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9

Serving can be tiring, inconvenient, and unseen—but God promises that faithfulness always bears fruit. Every meal served, prayer prayed, every food backpack delivered, and hand extended matters more than we know. God calls us to be obedient to Him. As humans, we are distracted by the traps and lies that Satan sets for us. The need to be affirmed and praised. The need to be respected and heard. We need to be celebrated and cheered for our efforts and sacrifices. These are all good things in the context of their primary source, God our Father, not of the world. Let’s help each other keep our eyes and hearts set firmly on Jesus and not be distracted by the muck and mire of the world. Our reward will be so much richer if we can let go of these worldly desires.

As expected, this winter has been BRUTAL! The EWR Network of Warming Centers in the Tri-County area has been activated most nights in January. HCC was on call as one of the warming centers on January 18-24. We saw new faces serving, returning folks to teach the ropes, and extreme generosity of time, energy, food, and supplies. A huge lesson for all of us was commitment, flexibility, and kindness. We had to be open to anything. For instance, we couldn’t control the weather. We couldn’t control the numbers. Each night, we weren’t sure what we were walking into. But with absolute certainty, we know that God was glorified and honored through everyone’s obedience. HCC will be on call again from February 15-22. Volunteers of all shapes, sizes, ages, stages, and abilities are needed. From blessing neighbors to prepping kits for ministry partners, these simple projects make a big impact. Grab a friend, pick a night, and serve with joy. Each opportunity focuses on simple, meaningful tasks that can be accomplished in 60 minutes that make a real impact outside the walls of Harvester with our community and ministry partnerships. Task: Assemble nonperishable meal kits and warm welcome notes for guests who will stay at HCC during freezing nights.
Who You’re Serving: Neighbors experiencing homelessness who need safety, warmth, and dignity in harsh weather.
Why It Matters: These kits provide nourishment during vulnerable moments and communicate the love of Jesus clearly.

Task: Make handwritten encouragement cards and assemble small care kits.
Who You’re Serving: Central County Fire Department.
Why It Matters: First responders often face high stress and trauma exposure. A word of gratitude speaks life and reminds them the church sees and supports them.

Option 3: Birthday In A Box for Children in Foster Care  

Task: Create birthday celebration box for children in foster care (cake mix, frosting, decorations, small gift, card). 

Who You’re Serving: Local foster families to empower them to create joy-filled memories when their foster child is enduring hardship.  

Why It Matters: Every child deserves to feel celebrated, seen, and valued. This simple bag sends joy straight into a family’s home.

Option 4: Find and Fill 

Who You’re Serving: Literal neighbors who may not know the love of Jesus and the community of His people.  

What You’ll Do: After the group prays together, reflects on where the Holy Spirit is nudging them, they go into the neighborhood, find a need, and fill that need in 60 minutes or less.  

Why It Matters: Spiritual maturity comes from time with God in prayer and being obedient to how He leads us.

The days and weeks have been jam-packed from food pantry to school outreach to serving with our Community and Ministry partners such as Faith Haven House, The Sharing Shed, and The Sparrow’s Nest. Your financial giving allowed monthly support to those partners and more, including Bad Boyz Jail Ministry, Boys and Girls Clubs of St Charles County, Child Advocacy Center, EWR Warming & Cooling Centers, Joni & Friends, REACH St Charles, Safe Families, as well as so many individuals and families right in our own backyard. Food Pantry Donation Pick Up Drivers Still Needed

Are you a college student without morning classes on Wednesdays or Thursdays? Do you have a flexible work schedule? Stay-at-home parent or recently retired? We are STILL in need of regular and substitute donation pick-up drivers for the HCC Food Pantry. You need about 2 hours a week to pick up donations using the HCC Food Pantry Van, deliver back to the pantry, unload, weigh, and sort. School Serving Choice Survey

HCC St Charles Campus Local Outreach serves about 10 of our local schools through events and the food backpack ministry. Our primary investment is in the schools that are neighbors to the HCC St Charles Campus. These include Hackmann Rd Early Childhood, Barnwell Middle School, Becky David Elementary, and Harvest Ridge Elementary. In 2026, we want our School Outreach Crew Leaders to know exactly who they can call on to serve at the schools. We also want them to know who they are discipling and equipping to serve. We are asking anyone who has ever served with School Outreach or who is now thinking about serving with School Outreach to complete this School Serving Choice Survey. We are requesting that you choose the primary school you would like to serve at to build consistent trusting relationships, as well as a secondary school. You will still be included in the large School Outreach group and can serve anywhere you like. But for the purposes of communicating specific serving opportunities, building a serve community, and providing information, our School Outreach Crew Leaders have requested please CLICK HERE to complete the survey by January 30th.

How To Survive The Holiday Chaos

Well friends, Thanksgiving Meal #1 is over. Some of you may be racing to Meal #2 to appease the family. Where I am kind of jealous of those of you who have large families who want (and expect) to spend every holiday with you, I have to admit I like the slow pace we have in our family. Smaller families and large distances keep us from even expecting to spend every holiday with relatives.

The mad dash begins for all of us. We are all gearing up for the pressure to be everything, do everything, and attend every event between Thanksgiving and Christmas. But do we really? Is this something that Satan has nonchalantly slid across the table, and we have received his lie as truth?

Here are the questions for you to consider before the season begins:

1. What would need to be true for you to grow in love, joy, and peace during this year’s run?
What would you have to say no to, to make that a reality? What would you say yes to? And here’s another one worth asking: What could we do more simply—something that keeps the meaning of the experience, but requires less time and energy? 

2. What do your closest family and friends want from you this year?
What do they want you to be fully present for—not just show up at? Ask them. Then put those moments on your 2026 calendar now. Try hard to keep those as non-negotiable dates. 

3. What are you cramming into the Thanksgiving-to-Christmas run that could actually wait until late January?

I, for one, REALLY struggle mentally during January and February. I think we all need something to look forward to in the dark days of winter and loosened up the holiday schedule for everyone.

Let’s not worry about what we are missing out on or who we might be letting down. Did you pass on the gravy? Let’s also pass on the pressure and pace. Let’s not pass on the people in our lives. You really don’t have to prove anything to anyone.

October 2025 Newsletter

Just pretend when you open this newsletter it’s still October because I am sure most of you are like me, thinking: “What the what, how did November and that Vile Daylight Savings Time Sneak In!

God and I have been simmering in Matthew 9 and Ephesians 4 for many weeks now. For this month, I want to invite you to settle into Matthew 9:37-38.

In Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

Is it just me, or is there an actual command from Jesus that says to pray for laborers to be raised up and sent out? What does that mean for us at HCC Local Outreach? I often tell others that people who choose to serve with Local Outreach really do see the world differently. They have a very hard time passing by those who are suffering. It almost physically hurts them to overlook those who are hungry, those who are thirsty, those who are naked, those who are in prison. My heart, mind and soul have been especially burden this month with the increasing needs of our community. Recently I have often felt overwhelmed and ineffective. It has been a beautiful thing though, because it reminds me to daily and almost hourly surrender to God, submit to His authority, and trust in Him. It has also been a reminder that I am to be obedient to His calling, but I am not responsible for the outcomes. Those battles belong to the Lord.

Your faithful service in the HCC Food Pantry, school outreach, the Sharing Shed, or any part of being a Good Neighbor and serving with HCC Local Outreach is a living answer to that prayer. You are the hands and feet of Jesus, meeting physical needs and planting seeds of hope in our community.

Thank you for your compassion, your time, and your heart for people. Whether you’re stocking shelves, praying with families, or simply offering a smile, you are making an eternal impact.

We’re praying for more laborers to join this beautiful work. If you know someone who might be interested in serving, invite them to one of our upcoming VIP Tours—a behind-the-scenes look at how ministry happens at Harvester and how others can use their gifts and talents to unleash hope in our city.. These tours are a great way to connect, learn, and take the first step toward volunteering.

Volunteer recruitment is ongoing, and we’d love to welcome new hearts into this mission. Let’s continue to pray for God to stir hearts and send more workers into His harvest. Our world needs us more than ever.

 

Upcoming Events

November 1: As you have heard in the news, SNAP benefits are suspended during the federal government shutdown. We are anticipating more of our neighbors needing support during this unusual time. The food pantry always needs canned meat, canned meals, fresh meat ( venison too!), and cereal. Our HCC food pantry also needs your plastic grocery bins. You can drop off donations in the covered bin outside of the South entrance, Monday through Thursday, or in the wooden bin near the TV in the Mission Cafe on Sundays. We love hearing stories of Harvester Christians like Stacey Floweree mobilizing her neighbors to give to their neighborhood food drive to support the pantry. Thank you Stacey and friends!

Tuesday, 11-4-25 There is nothing on the ballot in our area so HCC is not needed as our neighborhood’s regular polling site. The next time we will serve our neighbors in this way is April 2026.

If you plan to serve in any capacity during the warming centers in January or February 2026,  I highly encourage you to attend this EWR training at Wentzville Christian Church from 6:30 to 8:30. If you need to carpool, we are meeting at the church at 5:50 PM and leaving at 6 PM. Not only will this provide a clear vision of why we do this, but also how we do this, and as you know, knowledge is always power!

 

Thursday 11-6-25 

The closure of the O’Fallon Salvation Army Shelter has left people, including children, without a safe place to go. Specialty shelters are nearly full, and families in crisis are being sent outside the county for help. Temperatures are cooling in St. Charles County, and it has been 637 days (nearly TWO YEARS) since we’ve had an option for our families seeking emergency shelter.. Over 600 of our neighbors are at risk. The Continuum of Care for St. Charles, Warren, and Lincoln Counties is actively looking for resources and partners to address this urgent need. Together, we can do better for our neighbors. Our community is invited to attend Community Coffee Conversation: No Place To Go at Saints Joachim and Ann Care Service to hear directly from those on the front lines, share ideas, and explore urgent solutions.

With so many of our local children and families experiencing stress from strikes, furloughs, or their benefits being paused, we need to serve from our knees even more. We will have two School Outreach Prays and Preps this month to pray for our schools as well, and prep our handwritten cards and gifts for teachers for the upcoming Christmas season. In November, we will meet in the Annex on Monday, November 10 and November 24 at 6:30 p.m. Enter through door #10. Our Annual LO/GS Gathering is just around the corner! This is the only time all of Local Outreach, Food Pantry, and Guest Services volunteers can be together in one setting! We will enjoy a fellowship meal from Ginghams together as we celebrate all you did this year to unleash hope inside and outside the walls of Harvester! We will hear our Vision for next year and receive some practical evangelism training, and pray for how God will use us to bring more laborers to the harvest!

Community and Ministry Partner Updates

Tuesday, 11-11-25 Joni & Friends has its St Charles County Church Network Meeting for Disability Ministry Leaders and Volunteers at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of O’Fallon, MO. The guest speaker will be DeAnn Yount, licensed counselor from Crossroads Counseling Centers. DeAnn will offer encouragement and hope for those who give of themselves to meet the needs of others. The meeting will explore the sustaining power of Christ’s presence and the renewal of our spirits when the work feels overwhelming. Please RSVP HERE

Immediate Volunteer Needs

Our ministry partners at Faith Haven House urgently need volunteers.
Volunteers are needed to be at Faith Haven House every afternoon and evening between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Volunteers are primarily needed to socialize with any residents who are present during those hours. Other volunteers who have served in this capacity share that sometimes it is just chatting around the dinner table. Other times it’s watching TV or playing cards. Other times, it was teaching a hobby like crocheting. As consistent, trusting relationships are built with the residents over time, there will be opportunities to share the gospel. The Child Advocacy Center of Northeast MO is looking for 1-2 unique volunteers. They have been diligently building out a chaplaincy program called The Hope Project to assist children and families who seek their services in the healing process. The CAC has also seen a need for its staff to have spiritual care as well. You do not have to have specific chaplain qualifications or credentials. The crux of chaplaincy is the Ministry of Presence. God can do so much when we are willing to sit in the hardships and heartbreaks of others, just so they know they are not alone. Food Pantry Van drivers are needed to pick up food donations. The pickups consist of going to 3 stores and picking up their available donations that day using the HCC Food Pantry Van. Food Pantry Van Drivers need to be able to pick up boxes that weigh up to 50lbs. Food Pantry Van Drivers would bring items back to the HCC food pantry, weigh each store’s donation separately in several categories, and put away accordingly (freezer, cooler, table).
Pickups are in the mornings, Wednesdays & Fridays. A Saturday driver is also needed to pick up on Saturday mornings from the Lindenwood Schnucks bakery. Potential volunteers will need a cleared motor vehicle records check through HCC before driving. Did you know? The Good Neighbor Serve Crew receives requests from HCC members and our neighbors to help with one-time tasks such as moving, mowing, powerwashing, simple home or car repairs, or trimming trees and bushes. Castlio Elementary School K-Kids is hosting a Pancake Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 13. Volunteers are needed to cook approximately 2000 pancakes and sausages between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

HCC has committed to being on call as one of the area warming centers the week of January 18-24, 2026, and February 15-21, 2026. The EWR warming centers are activated if the temperature is forecasted to be 20 degrees or less. This program is a death prevention intervention to keep our unhoused and most vulnerable neighbors safe in extreme weather conditions. This program is even more needed this year with the closure of the O’Fallon Salvation Army. There will be MANY volunteers needed to serve in MANY capacities. Prayer Warriors, Hospitality to cook and serve meals, Laundry, Set Up, Clean Up, but ESPECIALLY volunteers to stay overnight on the nights we are activated. April 2025 Newsletter

New Life in Christ: A Season of Baptism and Service

Spring is a season of renewal, a time when we can usually shake off any worries of bleak winter days and look forward to days that just burst with vibrant new life. It is so wonderful to be able to celebrate Easter in this season—the ultimate reminder that Jesus conquered death and offers us new life in Him. At Harvester Christian Church, we see this truth come alive in so many ways, but few are as powerful as witnessing baptisms during this time of year.

Baptism is a public declaration of faith, a moment when someone steps into the water to proclaim that they are leaving behind their old life and stepping into a new life with Christ. Romans 6:4 says, “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” This new life is not just about our own salvation—it calls us into something greater: a life of service, generosity, and love for others.

Take a risk in the name of the Lord

There is not a set formula that leads someone to live unhoused. We can’t be so naive and judgemental to assume someone got into drugs, lost their job, doesn’t want responsibility, and is now living on the streets. In St Charles County homelessness is becoming a crisis. The situation is fueled by the lack of affordable housing, lack of transportation, and affordable child care,  mental health challenges, job loss, and other life crises that create depression and despair.

What is the cause of homelessness? 

If you talk to any HCC volunteer who served in the Warming Center they will all humbly share that they entered that serving opportunity with a preconceived idea of why someone would be homeless. In reality, there are so many situations that can lead to homelessness. Many of us in the church are just one hospitalization away from being homeless ourselves.

Homelessness can mean :

  • Earning a wage that is insufficient to meet housing costs.
  • Aging out of foster care and not having a permanent place to live.
  • Fleeing an abuser as they seek a safe place to live.
  • Living in a constant state of survival mode.
  • Being arrested for sleeping in a public location, despite having nowhere else to go.

So what does this mean for us at Harvester Christian Church? What can we possibly do?

Pray

For sure, I can share all the ways I know how to serve our unhoused neighbors, but I don’t know specifically how God is calling you. Pray for God to give you eyes to see His children who are experiencing homelessness. Pray for your heart to break for the things that break His heart. Pray for God to open your mind to the possibilities of service through justice and generosity. Pray you are obedient to the command of Loving God with all your heart, all your mind, and all your soul. Pray you are also obedient to the command of loving your neighbor as yourself.

Educate yourself and others

As I mentioned before there are lots of reasons for homelessness but there are solutions that work to end homelessness as well. The solution to ending homelessness is simply housing. “Rapid re-housing provides short-term rental assistance and services. The goals are to help people obtain housing quickly, increase self-sufficiency, and stay housed. It is offered without preconditions (such as employment, income, absence of criminal record, or sobriety) and the resources and services provided are typically tailored to the needs of the person.” Rapid re-housing can end homelessness by quickly connecting people to a home and services. We need Christian landlords willing to provide truly affordable housing with limited barriers. We need policies that encourage and incentivize business owners and community leaders to support rapid re-housing initiatives. We need many more second-chance employers to provide employment opportunities at a living wage. We need to be well versed in what God’s word sets as expectations and commandments for serving the poor and marginalized.

Practical and Tangible Help for Transportation

Many of our unhoused neighbors have been able to hold onto a car of some form or another. This provides their access not only to employment but also serves as their home Many of our unhoused neighbors share that transportation is a barrier that hinders access to services and opportunities. Challenges can include high maintenance costs and unreliable vehicles. You can help by donating bikes, and gas/Uber cards, supporting small repairs (Jiffy Lube GCs), and offering to pay directly to insurance providers to make sure their cars are properly insured for 30,60 or 90 days. Or make a financial contribution to local organizations that provide direct services.

Take A Risk

Ultimately we need Christ’s followers to live their faith in action. We need Christians to be obedient to God’s calling in their lives and take a risk in the name of the Lord. We need to walk into loving others knowing that yes we may get taken advantage of, yes we may be inconvenienced, yes, our efforts may not work out, and yes something we own might be mistreated or abused. Yes, the individual we are helping may not know how to properly express gratitude. Yes, it might be messy and take a long time. Yes you may not get to see the results of your efforts and investment of your time, talents, and treasure in this individual. But all of those things are of this world. All of those excuses are really about pleasing ourselves and man rather than God.

I don’t know where is God is leading you in meeting this need in our community. But I do know we have to step out of faith and be much more intentional in our actions of serving those women, children, and men who are experiencing homelessness. If you want to learn more about homelessness in our community let’s schedule a coffee soon. We CAN do something about this issue not because of who we are but because of WHOSE we are.

March 2025 Edition: What’s Coming in HCC Local Outreach & Beyond
Thank You Father

On Sunday Nikomas preached on Gratitude. I had the vantage point of sitting up top during the third service. As I looked down I saw two of our warming center guests praising God with all of their might during a sermon on gratitude I saw one of our members who I know is battling harsh health issues praising with all their might during a sermon on gratitude. I saw one of our Local Outreach volunteers who I know is going through a rough family season praising with all of their might during a sermon on gratitude. That was one of the “Thank You Fathers” I wrote down in my phone. Thank you Father for examples of spiritual giants who praise you and thank you and keep a laser focus on you no matter what life throws their way.” I would love for you to share one of your “Thank You Fathers” in the comments of the blog!

Local Outreach Updates:
In order to focus on the For The One Campaign we had very few events in February. But if you attended one of the vision nights I know you got a piece of the momentum and excitement. I personally loved when we turned to our neighbors and prayed with 3-4 people seated around us for courage and for our One. Be sure to sign up for a time slot for the 24 Hours of Prayer. Commitment Sunday is coming up on March 9th. Continue praying about how God wants you to share his gifts to go above and beyond your normal giving.

I have been working hard to build out this blog with useful information. You can now find an overview of all current serving opportunities as well as many specific volunteer descriptions. Make it a goal to share those links with people in your small group this month.
